1). Learn some Thai. A few simple words and phrases helps immensely. สวัสดี or S̄wạs̄dī (Sawatdee) and then Kup (for male) or Ka (for female).
If you learn nothing else learn how to greet in Thai. Other useful Thai to learn include ... How are you? ... food and drink items you like ...
Thank you! ... washroom? ... and one of my favourites - Aroy (delicious) and as Thais especially love flattery this will get you some great
smiles in restaurants. Thais are famous for their smiles!
2). Try the food! Thailand quite simply possesses some of the tastiest cuisine in the world! Hot and spicy if you want, sweet or sour or both, intense
flavours and interesting to explore!
3). Respect Thai Culture! You will enjoy your visit more. I believe Thais respect you more if you respect them and their culture. In the interests of
making visitors welcome Thais will overlook many things but don’t push it.
4). Explore the exoticness of Thailand. No doubting, Thailand possesses many things foreigners think as exotic. Temples, diverse culture, unknown
foods, superstitious ways, Buddhist beliefs and strong monarchist code.
5). Visit as many diverse areas as you can. Try the big city craziness that is Bangkok, a small fishing town like Bansaray, one of the many beaches
like Koh Samui, a cooler climate quieter northern life that is Chiang Mai or History like only Thailand can offer in Ayutthaya.
6). Learn Thai money. The Thai Baht remains a stable strong currency. Coins - Satang (100=1 baht) You will rarely see 25 and 50 satang. More
common, 1, 5 and 10 baht coins. Paper money - 20, 50, 100, 500 and 1000. Currently C$1 = 24.14 baht
7). Bring with you ... Clothing (loose fitting warm climate) ( I bring limited numbers and buy some here). You will find nice and inexpensive
cotton or silk shirts and loose fitting pants in cotton everywhere ... Toothpaste (toothpaste available here but maybe not your favourite) ...
Sandals (good quality sandals will serve you well if you do any walking at all) and flip-flops available everywhere.
8). You need a Visa ... Canadians and most other countries can visit Thailand on a free 30 day tourist visa. Longer stays are possible so if you
plan longer stays ... PLEASE check Thai government websites as the Thai government takes a dim view of overstays. You can be fined for
minor overstays to being blacklisted for extended overstays.
9). Explore Thai culture ... Check out Thai cultural dancing, attend Muay Thai boxing or visit one of the many magnificent Wats (Buddhist
Temples)
10). Look for that Thai smile!
