{{ January 21st Bangkok - Golden Buddha at Sukhothai Traimit

Today was a day of firsts. First time to visit the impressive Golden Buddha at Sukhothai - First time for my friend Noom as well (can't believe there is a temple in Bangkok he has not been too!) - first time I have been in the same area as that much gold!

The Sukhothai Traimit Golden Buddha has an impressive history. The image is over 700 years old, is made of solid gold, stands 15ft 9in tall and weighs 5.5 tons and at today's spot price for gold...C$276,762,816

Originally encased in plaster to conceal it from invading enemies, it resided at Wat Phrayakrai in Bangkok in the 3rd reign of the Chakkri Dynasty. When the temple was abandoned in 1931 it was moved to its present location. In 1955, when it came time to move the statue to its present building, the plaster was accidentally partly broken to reveal a Golden Buddha.
