May 7 .. PERU and Machu Picchu

There is something that comes over you the first time you walk around the corner and behold the vista that is Machu Picchu.
Kris and Peter see for the first time...Norma sees for the first time...Bob and Wendy see for the first time...John and Elsje see for the first time...Jerry sees for the first time...Frank sees for the first time.

Where do you begin? Here are some of the interesting areas ...

Our tour guide Fred who has a degree in archaeology proved to be a fantastic guide. His descriptions, history and scientific insight into the Incas and this amazing place was excellent. Much of what he said I had never heard before. Some of the more interesting things include:
1) a place where your voice is amplified in a strange way that he described as being carried by an underground stream from across the valley
2) the Incas were quite probably tall and had an extra bone that no others races did
3) the Incas made a precisely calculated alignment of sunlight streaming at a exact location on the winter and summer solstice
4) children born in this area have a special birthmark which goes away after a short period of time and the same thing happens in Mongolia ... Strange!
5) an obelisk the Incas erected was removed so the King of Spain could land by helicopter on
Machu Picchu
6) the Incas erected walls of granite so precisely carved that they fit perfectly without any mortar. They were built so solid that they are earthquake proof
7) the Incas probably abanded Machu Picchu when they learned of the Spanish coming. They even destroyed the trails so they would not be found. Indeed the site remained hidden from public until 1911 when it was "discovered" by American Hiram Bingham. Certainly some treasures were stolen from the site by others but the Spanish never did see it and that is why so much remains. There is so much more to discover.

And so much more to see ...
