Rambutan

Rambutan is native to Malaysia and grown all over Southeast Asia. A related species is even grown in Costa Rica. It sells for 75 baht ($2.60) per kilo. The fruit can only be ripened on the tree so it is not generally mass produced and exportable. It is closely related to Longan and Lychee.

The fruit is unappealing to would-be eaters and reminds me of mini hedgehogs. I find it delicious and sweet.
